The Cultural Shock: Travelling Through Dubai

As with any time that you end up going to a different country, you run in to things that do not really make as much sense to you. This is often the phenomenon of culture shock; where you are so used to doing something a certain way or seeing something a certain way because of the culture and society you grew up in that it never occurred to you that a different society would deal with that thing in a separate way. One country where this will be very apparent to a lot of people from a Western country like the United States of America, is Dubai.

Now for all intents and purposes, Dubai is not a country where you will be made to feel like you cannot continue living as you do or enjoy your vacation as you would in another country. The differences that you will face in Dubai are a lot more subtle and that is exactly why you might have to be careful, as subtle differences are often thought of as disrespect to the uninformed.

So in this article we will quickly talk about a handful of things that you should expect once you visit there. First of all, alcohol. A lot of people would think that Dubai being in the Middle East means that alcohol is banned. This is not true as alcohol is legal to buy and to consume regardless of anything, as long as you are over 21. You can have it in clubs, parties, restaurants, hotels, and pubs. The only thing you need to be considerate of is not being publically intoxicated and being a safe driver, and if you are buying to take the alcohol home, then you will need a permit and also you will need to buy from a licensed shop.
